Blake Announces New Athletic Hall of Fame and Call for Nominations

Loving cupA newly created Blake Athletic Hall of Fame will highlight the accomplishments of alumni, coaches and friends and celebrate the school's sports history. The hall of fame committee seeks nominations for inductees. Nominations can be made on behalf of others (living or deceased) or be self-nominated. Considerations for 2020 inductees can be submitted here through Dec. 31.

Alumni Spotlight

Peter Hitch '66, owner and president of Data Doctors in Wayzata, was named the 2019 Person of the Year by the Greater Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce. He will be honored at a luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Jill McCarthy '76 has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Department of the Interior. She received the award — the highest honorary recognition a department employee can achieve — for her vision and leadership advancing the U.S. Geological Survey's mission to provide information and knowledge of earthquakes to reduce deaths, injury and damage.

The New York Times crossword column, "Wordplay," recently featured a puzzle by Andrea Carla Michaels '76, "a Queen of the Monday puzzle." The puzzle's theme — descriptors for someone who talks a lot — was inspired by Andrea's Northrop seventh grade English teacher, Evelyn Singer.

Podcast host Molly Bloom '01 will present "Brains On Live" at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul on Sunday, Oct. 27. And look for a Q&A with Molly in the new issue of Cyrus, coming soon!

Danielle Brewer '12 was awarded the Rodney Wayne England, M.D. Scholarship, which recognizes outstanding achievement in medical student performance. She is completing her fourth year at the University of Minnesota Medical School and will graduate in May.

Emma Dayton '17 curated an exhibit for the Minnetonka Center for the Arts featuring the work of her dad, Jim Dayton '83. "Jim Dayton: Artist in His Studio" offers a close look at Jim's professional architectural work as well as his other artistic pursuits.

Libby Rickeman '17, a junior at MIT and a member of the women's tennis team, received the Christine Davis Sportsmanship Award at the 2019 NEWITT Tournament at Smith College and Mount Holyoke.

Jack Moe '18 and Sam Shapiro '18, co-founders of Sprint to Cite Soleil, were highlighted in the Star Tribune's "Minnspirations" column for their work with the nonprofit, which benefits youth in Haiti.

Madeline Wethington '19, a freshman defenseman on the Gophers' women's hockey team, was named the WCHA preseason rookie of the year and scored Minnesota's first goal of the season in the team's winning game over Colgate. She was also featured in a story in the Duluth News Tribune.

Head of School Discusses 'What We're Reading and What It Means for Blake'

At her annual Breakfast at Blake address, Anne Stavney shared her perspective on the importance of establishing a parent-school partnership, developing common language to support pluralism and helping young people find their purpose. A video of her presentation and Q&A is available on YouTube.
