He's spending a gap year doing photo and video work, which includes a lot of travel. He plans to attend the University of Tampa in fall 2019 to major in film production. Alumni Spotlight

Joan Argetsinger Steitz '58 has received the 2018 Lasker-Koshland Award for Special Achievement in Medical Science for her four decades of leadership in biomedical science. Her work includes pioneering discoveries in RNA biology, mentoring young scientists and supporting women in the field.

The New York Times talks with crossword constructor Andrea Carla Eisenberg Michaels '76, one of the publication's "queens of the Monday puzzle." Read about Andrea in her "Who Made My Puzzle?" Q&A.

The Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) has named Susan Heegaard '79 its president-elect. She will begin with MHEC on Nov. 1.

Filmmaker Annie Sundberg's '86 latest documentary, "Reversing Roe," which depicts the state of abortion and women's rights in America, was released this month on Netflix. Watch the trailer.

Eric Choi '99, a litigation partner with Chicago-based law firm Neal Gerber Eisenberg, was named one of the top 40 Under Forty Attorneys in Illinois to Watch by Law Bulletin Media.

An exhibition of Bly '99 and Rowan '99 Pope's artwork is on view at the Minneapolis Institute of Art through Oct. 29. Read about the virtuosic photorealists in "Drawn Together: Minnesota's Pope Brothers and the Art of Being Twins."

Filmmaker Sandra Bertalanffy '01 will attend Minnesota WebFest 2018 for a screening of her award-winning documentary series "KYNNSTLAH – A series of artist portraits" on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1:35pm at Hennepin Theatre Trust in Minneapolis. Read more about Sandra's work.

Javier Reyes '10 and his band, Post Animal, contributed to "27: The Most Perfect Album," a compilation of songs by various artists about each of the 27 amendments to the Constitution. Post Animal sings about the 16th Amendment, which gives Congress the right to tax income, in this project produced by the More Perfect podcast.

Global Immersion at Blake

Blake student with child from Sierra LeoneGlobal education prepares Blake students to shape and be shaped by the world. Having completed its third summer, Blake's global immersion program saw 13 students, three faculty chaperones and one parent travel to Sierra Leone and 14 students and two faculty chaperones travel to China.

Don Mezzenga Memorial Oct. 7

Don MezzengaThe Blake community is invited to celebrate the life of former teacher and coach Don Mezzenga at a memorial service on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 1 to 3pm in Blake's Bovey Chapel. Read his obituary and tributes to Mr. Mezzenga from former students published in 2000 in the book "Treasures in Our Lives: A Celebration of Our Teachers."

Blake Alumni Biennial Call for Submissions

Alumni artists are invited to submit their artwork to the Blake Alumni Biennial. The show's opening reception is Thursday, Dec. 27, in conjunction with the Alumni Holiday Party. Visit Blake's website for more information.

Kicking off a new year of the Breakfast at Blake speaker series, Head of School Anne Stavney shared three of Blake's key priorities and took guest questions. Her presentation is available on Blake's YouTube channel.

Nominations for Blake's Alumni Board are welcome year-round, but considerations for the 2019-20 board close on Saturday, Oct. 20. Board members can serve up to two three-year terms and all alumni in good standing are eligible.
