2018 Alumni Award Recipients

Don McCarthy '66, Eric Dayton '99, Kathryn Moos '03

The Alumni Board Recognition and Nominations Committee is proud to announce the recipients of this year's alumni awards. Blake congratulates Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Don McCarthy '66, Young Alumnus of the Year Eric Dayton '99 and Alumna Athlete of the Year Kathryn Moos '03.

Don will be the featured speaker at the Reunion Edition of Breakfast at Blake on Friday, Oct. 5, where he and Kathryn will be recognized for their awards. Young Alumnus of the Year Eric Dayton will be recognized before his Breakfast at Blake presentation on Thursday, Nov. 15.

Alumni Spotlight

Sallie Sheldon '69, a professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, is back in Minnesota this summer piloting a program to breed and train weevils to eat Eurasian watermilfoil, an invasive species taking over hundreds of Minnesota lakes. Read about her current project, sponsored by the Christmas Lake Association, in the Lakeshore Weekly News and watch a KARE 11 segment featuring Blake junior Lexie Dietz, who is one of 12 student volunteers for the program.

Photographer Tori Lowe Gagne '78 talks about documenting and advocating for the lives of wild horses in the United States in this blog post for Feature Shoot.

Anne Marie Ruff Grewal '90, author of the novel "Beneath the Same Heaven," shares 10 things she'd like her readers to know about her in this post on Female First.

Aaron Rapport '99, a professor of politics and international studies at Cambridge University, received this year's Pilkington Prize, awarded to teachers who have made a substantial contribution to the teaching program of their department, faculty or the university as a whole. He is also a frequent contributor to his department's podcast "Talking Politics."

CNN anchor Poppy Harlow '01 is featured in the Cosmopolitan article "The Great CNN Baby Boom" in which she shares the reality of trying to "do it all."

Zach Doerring '12 has signed on to play professional hockey with the Swedish Division 2 team Åmåls SK, reports his college alma mater, Concordia College.

Rory Taylor '14 is a recent graduate of Pomona College and an intern at the Center for American Progress. In a Teen Vogue op-ed, he explains how the policy of family separation at U.S. borders is a crisis that Native communities know all too well.

Max Lang '17, a student at Tulane University in New Orleans, was named to the 2018 USA Ultimate College All-Freshmen Team for the Southeast region. The teams were determined by a peer voting process open to college players on roster for the 2018 college postseason.

Ethan Roe '18 hit a 360-foot home run during Delano's Stars and Stripes Fourth of July Tournament, helping his American Legion baseball team, the Hopkins Flyers, defeat Minneapolis Southwest in their second game of pool play.
