Alumni Spotlight

Tom Vennum '52, a writer and anthropologist whose work celebrated lacrosse's Native American roots, died Sept. 24 at the age of 82 near his home on Madeline Island, Wisconsin. Kip Dooley '08 remembers Tom in this tribute he wrote for US Lacrosse Magazine.

Carolyn Light Bell '60 has published a new collection of stories. In "I Heard a Fish Cry and Other Stories," she portrays animals as witness, alter ego, adversary and foil to illuminate human fallibility. She will be reading from her book on Sunday, March 18 at 10:30am at the Calhoun Executive Center in Minneapolis. Call 612-751-4887 by March 1 to register for the event.

Jack Morrison '63, who played on the 1968 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team, was profiled in a story for Lake Minnetonka Magazine about local Olympians.

Minnesota Business Magazine named Heidi Hensel Heiland '79, CEO and owner of Heidi's Lifestyle Gardens and GrowHaus, as one of its 2018 Women Who Lead.

Nordic skier Leslie Hale '83 competed in the Masters World Cup at Theodore Wirth Park in January. The event attracted more than a thousand skiers from more than 20 nations. Leslie was profiled in the Star Tribune before the event.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art presents the first museum show of Minnesota artists and twin brothers Bly and Rowan Pope [Blake class of 1999], who have worked side by side their entire lives. The exhibition, which features a selection of their drawings, paintings and works in process, will run Feb. 17 through Oct. 28 in the Star Tribune Foundation Atrium.

A mobile app proposed by technology architect Colin McFadden and digital preservation specialist Samantha Porter '05 of the University of Minnesota won the 2018 3M Art and Technology Award from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The two will receive $50,000 toward the development of the project, which is an app that turns the museum into a puzzle room, providing a new, interactive way to deepen visitor engagement with the museum's collection.

Erik Gersovitz '09 makes an appearance in this Michelob Ultra Super Bowl commercial featuring actor Chris Pratt. (Hint, pay special attention at 0:34!)

The National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) has created classroom and tournament resources to celebrate Black History Month. Sarah Carthen Watson '11 is one of the featured NSDA alumni in the organization's poster series.

Dani Cameranesi '13 is in Pyeongchang, South Korea competing with the U.S. Women's Olympic Hockey Team. She scored the third goal in the team's 3-1 win over Finland. Governor Mark Dayton '65 proclaimed Feb. 8 "Minnesota Winter Olympians Day."

Upper School Musical: 'Once on This Island'

A magnificent cast of characters transforms the reality of a Caribbean village devastated by a storm into a fantastical world alive with hope. Gather around for "Once On This Island," where the timeless power of theater brings us together, moves our hearts and helps us weather the storm. Acclaimed Nature Writer to Visit Blake as 2018 Otis Environmental Author

Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer will visit Blake in April to engage with students and share with the community observations of the natural world through her lenses as a plant ecologist, professor of environmental science, writer, mother and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.
