Brett Anderson ʼ88, a career restaurant critic for The Times-Picayune, pursued an eight-month investigation that uncovered allegations of sexual harassment made by 25 women against the prominent Besh Restaurant Group. Since publishing the exposé, Besh and other high-profile chefs have been fired after more women shared their stories. Read "Brett Anderson Created the Watershed Moment of the Year"

Eric Dayton ʼ99 has become a staunch advocate for rebranding Minnesota as a culturally unique North instead of the flyover Midwest and encourages all its residents to take pride in the true North spirit. In November, Stitch Fix founder and CEO Katrina Lake ʼ01 became the youngest female founder to take a company public and the first woman to take an internet company public in 2017, an IPO milestone lauded by fellow women in the tech industry.

Michael Olson ʼ01 and his band, Lake Street Dive, contributed a Caribbean-flavored version of "I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas" to Paul McCartney's new release "Holidays Rule Vol. 2," a compilation of various artists doing their takes on traditional and some not-so-traditional holiday songs.

Minny & Paul, Laura Waldman's ʼ07 curated gift box company featuring Minnesota-made products, was recently profiled in the Star Tribune.

Zeam Porter ʼ16 is co-curator of TransFabulous: Beyond the Binary, an exhibit featuring works by 21 Twin Cities artists, all of whom identify as transgender or gender nonconforming. Lukey Walden ʼ13 is one of the featured artists in the exhibit, which is on display in the Cargill Hall gallery at Minneapolis Central Library through Jan. 5.

Reece Sanders ʼ17 is a freshman at the University of Minnesota, where he plays for the Gophers men's golf team. He talked about his experiences in a Q&A with Gopher Sports.

Blake Names Chief Advancement Officer

Rebecca Schubring will join Blake as Chief Advancement Officer on Jan. 8. Rebecca brings 27 years of leadership experience in development and advancement work for mission-driven educational institutions and nonprofit organizations. She comes to Blake from Macalester College, where she most recently served as executive director for strategic initiatives and principal gifts. Read more

Boys' Hockey Captain Scores Two Goals in Honor of Uncle Art Saunders '69

With a flick of his wrist, Jackson Saunders ʼ18 christened the new scoreboard at the Blake School Ice Arena that bears his own last name. The Art Saunders (Class of '69) scoreboard is named to honor Jackson's uncle, who passed away in 2012 after a nearly three-year battle with brain cancer. "My uncle meant a lot to me, and still means a lot to me," Jackson said. "He was a leader on and off the ice, and the biggest thing was he played with heart, he played with a love for the game, and that's what I play for." Read "Blake Claws Past Holy Angels 4-1"

Edina Teen Athlete and Budding Scientist Wins National Poetry Award

This fall, Ben Lee ʼ19 was named one of five National Student Poets in the U.S. The Star Tribune's Kim Ode talked with Lee about how he discovered his love of poetry, what it means to him and how he plans to encourage other young people to appreciate poetry. Ode writes, "As a National Student Poet, Lee must develop a service project. He's proposed one with LearningWorks, a public-private partnership between Minneapolis Public Schools and the Blake School that helps prepare students for college.

Building Leaders, Building Bridges

"All of you have had moments when you've been inspired by someone who has beliefs different from your own. Reflect on these," Eboo Patel told Upper School students during a recent two-day visit to campus as the Northrop and Blake Classes of 1955 Speaker. As founder and president of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), Patel encourages a young generation to recognize how their own and others' identities can inspire leadership and collaboration. A gifted storyteller, Patel illustrated how effective leaders have forged bridges by finding common ground among people of all faiths and identities. Read more
