Scott Forbes '82 has published his first book. "Dreamwalking" is based on the true story of a gifted young man who is left paralyzed from the waist down when he is accidentally pushed off a cliff and ends up moving to a state-run nursing home, where he meets a cast of characters. Read more

Libby Forbes Utter '83 has been named the executive director of Gilda's Club Twin Cities, a nonprofit dedicated to providing free, customized emotional and social support to people living with cancer. Libby will be responsible for managing the organization's operations and fundraising. Read more

The "Goldie Scholars" program — in honor of the late Dave Goldberg '85 — is a multi-million-dollar effort to support students in need. The program was announced Oct. 2, on what would have been Dave's 50th birthday. Read more

Rob Goldberg's '89 digital studio startup, Fresno, has raised $8 million in seed-funding, which will be used to continue building its patent-pending content-analytics engine. He talks about his work on The Wrap.

Native American health advocate Sasha Houston Brown '05 is a leader in a grassroots movement to improve community health by reviving the active lifestyle of their Native ancestors. She was recently featured in this Star Tribune article.

Tomas Yanez '13 talks with Lewis and Clark College's magazine about leveraging his internship with Nike to land a permanent position with the company. Read more

'Girls & Sex' Author to Speak at Blake

Peggy Orenstein will discuss her New York Times bestselling book "Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape." A panel of area experts will join Orenstein to discuss topics related to adolescent development, sexuality, psychology and education. Adolescents, parents, teachers, professionals and community members are welcome. For details and registration visit MPSI.org.

Eboo Patel Returns to Blake

How do we create a world where people from different backgrounds live in equal dignity and mutual loyalty? Eboo Patel, a leading voice in the movement for cooperation across difference and the founder and president of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), will help Blake community members tackle this complex and timely question when he visits campus in November as the Northrop and Blake Classes of 1955 speaker. The Blake community will have an opportunity to hear him speak at an evening presentation on Wednesday, Nov. 15 and at Breakfast at Blake on Thursday, Nov. 16. Learn more

Upper School Presents 'The Laramie Project'

"The Laramie Project," by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, is about the reaction to the 1998 murder of University of Wyoming gay student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. It is a breathtaking collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable. The show runs Nov. 17-19 in the MacMillan Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available online.

8 Blake Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

These academically talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships.

Notes and Reminders

(Re)Discover Blake Admissions Events

Local alumni looking for a school for their own children are encouraged to rediscover their alma mater at one of our upcoming admission events. On-campus Discover Blake events will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28 (Blake campus, Hopkins, grades PK-8), Saturday, Nov. 4 (Highcroft campus, Wayzata, grades PK-5) and Saturday, Nov. 11 (Northrop campus, Minneapolis, grades 9-12). See the complete schedule, and please remember to share these dates with a friend!

Ice Arena Open House

The Blake community will celebrate the completion of the Blake Ice Arena renovation on Saturday, Nov. 11. Lace up your skates and take to the ice (10-11am), enjoy refreshments and a program (11am-noon) and stay to cheer the girls' hockey team as they take on Cretin-Derham Hall in their first home game of the season. Fun for the whole family! Please register by Tuesday, Nov. 7.

The Take on Blake: LearningWorks

LearningWorks is private-public partnership between Blake and Minneapolis Public Schools. The program sets high-potential, underserved MPS middle school students on the path to college and also supports talented high school and college students who are called to teach. Watch our Reunion Weekend panel discussion with Executive Director Natalie Owens-Pike '07 and Blake Upper School students serving as LW teachers, who share their inspirational experiences with this transformative program.
