Emily Chambers Blejwas's '96 debut novel, "Once You Know This," will be released by Penguin Random House in September. The book, which is for middle grade readers, centers on 11-year-old Brittany, who wishes for a better life for herself, her mom and her baby brother as she musters the courage to make it happen.

Why I Give: Steve Lewis '59

Steve Lewis admits that it has been years since he stepped on a Blake campus. But he doesn't have to be a regular visitor to support the institution that helped him get his start. It was his education at Blake, he says, that propelled him to succeed beyond it. "The teachers there really did make a difference to me, and Blake was terrific preparation for Amherst, which helped form me," he says. Read more

New Director of College Counseling Announced

Sara Kyle has been named as Blake's next Director of College Counseling. Since joining Blake in 2001, Kyle has served as Associate Director of College Counseling. In that time, she has articulated Blake's curriculum and strengths with admissions officers around the country. To date, her outreach includes more than 200 colleges and universities. Read more

Successes at State

  • The girls' hockey team took home its fourth state title in five years with a 6-2 win over St. Paul United.
  • The Blake/Breck boys' swim and dive team, the Bearstangs, had a surprise state championship win, upsetting five-years-running defending champion St. Thomas Academy.
  • Senior Nellie Ide earned the girls' Alpine skiing individual state title, placing first in both her runs.

Life at Blake Videos Showcase Arts, Science and Engineering

New videos offering a closer look at Blake projects and classes are available on the school's website. The latest videos include Integrated Arts at the Middle School, the Upper School's Bassett Creek Watershed project, and engineering and programming in the Lower School.

Notes and Reminders

Cyrus Winter 2017

The latest issue of Blake's magazine, Cyrus, is available online. Our Winter 2017 issue features a cover story on Cassidy Blackwell '02 ("A Woken Beauty," pg. 6). As brand marketing lead for Walker and Company, a health and beauty products startup for people of color, Cassidy finds herself at the center of a movement for those reclaiming their natural roots. We also talked with Nick Swaggert '99, a U.S. veteran who combines his military background and business experience to help give former felons and other at-risk men a second chance. ("Better Futures," pg. 18). And we celebrate the Northrop campus's 100th anniversary in In Photos (pg. 12).

Call for Proposals: McGuire Visiting Artist 2017-18

Blake welcomes proposals for its 2017-18 McGuire Visiting Artist residency. Established by Bill and Nadine McGuire in 1993, the biennial program funds a visual artist-in-residence who collaborates with faculty and students in grades K through 12. Visit the school's website for more information.
