Javier Reyes ’10 is a musician in the Chicago-based band Post Animal. He lives in Humboldt Park with his band and partner and serves at a restaurant. He has yet to be beaten in an underwater breath-holding competition. Could there be a Guinness World Record in his future? Learn more about Javier in this month’s Bear Pause.

Wall Street Journal reporter and author Michael Phillips ’80 received the 2016 "Tex" McCrary Award for Journalism earlier this month at the Patriot Awards Gala, which honors those who embody the characteristics of the Medal of Honor.

Scott Morrow Johnson ’88 is an award-winning freelance sportswriter. The University of Nebraska Press will release his book “Phog: The Most Influential Man in Basketball," a biography on basketball coach Forrest "Phog" Allen, in November. Read more

Two-year-old Ally has been living at a specialized hospital in London for the last eight months due to complications from chronic granulomatous disorder (CGD). His father, Andrew Kim ’98, says that a bone marrow transplant could save his son's life. Though Ally has been put at the top of the donor list, no match has been found across all worldwide registries. Read more

Fresh off of a sold-out performance at Radio City Music Hall, Michael Olson ’01 and his band, Lake Street Dive, will be musical guests on the season premiere of “A Prairie Home Companion” on Oct. 15. The performance is sold out but the live show and a rebroadcast will air on Minnesota Public Radio.

Stephanie Rich ’01 recently launched a new strategic marketing company, Goby Partners, with co-founder Jaylon Rosenblum. Learn more

Dani Cameranesi ’13 (University of Minnesota) and Karlie Lund ’15 (Princeton) both made the Hockey Writers list of 13 Forwards to Watch in Women’s College Hockey for the upcoming season.

Anne Slusser ’14, a Duke junior and lacrosse team member, was named to the 2015-16 Atlantic Coast Conference Honor Roll, which is comprised of student-athletes who participated in a varsity-level sport and maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. Read more

Excellence Accelerated in the News

Blake’s $80 million fundraising campaign, Excellence Accelerated, made its public debut earlier this fall. The Star Tribune, Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, and Finance and Commerce reported on the school’s plans for increased student financial assistance and faculty professional development and facilities improvements.

Modified Football Game Bridges Gap Between Flag and Tackle

Blake Middle School students interested in football now participate in Fusion Football, a modified form of football that emphasizes fundamentals and puts the brakes on tackling. Blake Debater Shares Insights on Presidential Debates

National media outlets have invited Blake senior Ellie Grossman, a member of the USA Debate team, to share her thoughts on this season's presidential debates. She was cited in a Washington Post piece about the double standards women often face during debates ("How could sexism hurt Clinton in the debates? These female high school debaters know.") and gave the Hollywood Reporter a critique of the candidates' performances in the second presidential debate ("USA's Top Young Debaters Critique Trump, Clinton").

10 Blake Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

These academically talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships. Read more

Stereotypes and Healthy Gender Identity

Blake and the Edina Parent Network are partnering to present Jennifer Bryan, a national expert who helps schools navigate issues of gender identity. The event, on Monday, Nov. 14 at the Edina Performing Arts Center, is free and open to the public.
